When you do not seek or need external approval.. you are at your most powerful” – Caroline Myss
I wish life was that simple. That you don’t have to live by anyone’s standards. That you are free to do whatever you want without thinking of others’ approval. That you can do whatever you want without earning someone’s disapproval. Live and let live as the saying goes. But you see, life doesn’t roll that way. From the moment you were born, you have to live by the standards of others.
Being born in your family, you have to follow the standards set by your parents. Their approval is valuable to you above all else. After all, when the world turns its back at you, you can surely count on your family. They will never abandon you – their own flesh and blood. You will not begrudge them and will constantly seek their to show your gratitude.
As you grow older, the world you live in gets bigger too. When during your toddler years all you have are your family members, you will now have to go to school and meet peers around the same age as you. Some you will click with on the spot, others you wont like and you don’t know why. In time, you will have to live by your friends standards so you will “belong” with them.
Society subtly dictates how we live our life. Though we might not be aware consciously, unconsciously we are seeking the approval of the people around us.
“A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval” – Mark Twain
With all the things going around you, all the factors you perceive that you need to get approval from, you should never ever let those things affect your approval of yourself. At the end of the day, you are the only person accountable for yourself.
For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, but lose his own soul? – Mark 8:36(KJV)
You should not let the approval of others rule over you. If they love you, they will eventually accept whatever it is that you want. If they see you happy, they will also be happy. If not, then you know where you stand in their lives. You need to be someone you are not to be accepted. That, my friend, is a sad way to live. Let go of negativity. Let go of people who will only bring you down. Don’t be too hard on yourself.
The most important approval you will ever need is the approval of your Heavenly Father
Do you live according to His standards? Whose approval do you seek? Whom do we want to impress most? Do you do the things that pleases Him? Are you a living example of His love to others? If you love Him, you will do everything to gain His approval. Let me end this with the verses below:
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. – Galatians 1:10(ESV)
Our purpose is to please God, not people. He alone examines the motives of our hearts. 1 Thessalonians 2:4, NLT
