When news about David Bowie’s death reached me early this week, I was sad. Then yesterday, while having dinner with my family, I learned that Alan Rickman (the genius who portrayed Severus Snape) died too, I was devastated. I went from the first stage of grief to the second one in a matter of seconds. (5 stages of grief)
I find it funny before that we mourn for people we do not know personally, especially celebrities. I mean, why grieve their loss when you haven’t even spoken a single word to them, right? I felt both guilt, shame, and confusion for feeling sadness for people I have never personally met. Is it really a waste of emotional energy to grieve for them? Is it an insult to the people who suffer “real” and “personal” loss? Are people just bandwagoning for expressing their sympathies for these artists? (more…)
