So you want to have your own space in cyberspace? Have you been thinking recently about putting up a blog but don’t know where to start? Here are some tricks that I have learned on my almost 10 years of blogging. Please note that this is not an exact science. Just some things that worked for me. I have been getting many inquiries about blogging recently so I decided to make this a series. Here goes the first entry! <3
Questions you need to ask yourself to discover if blogging is right for you:
1. Do you like to write, share or communicate your message through words, visuals or photos?
2. Are you disciplined and self-motivated?
3. Are you willing to put yourself and your work “out there”?
IF you answered yes, then you are one step ahead! If you ever feel doubtful, do know that there is more than enough space in the blogosphere for you and your voice. Make it your own personal space in cyberspace. The questions above are just to solidify your resolve.
If writing is really your passion, unleash it and just do it. Don’t feel sad if at first you think that you cannot do it. Practice makes perfect. Nobody was born great. You have to start to become great. 😉
By now you should have a pretty solid resolve that you want to do this. Now what? Before launching your site you must:
Take a look at the blogs you read. When you read blogs, what sort of content are you drawn to?
if you read several blogs with the same niche, which one do you seem to visit first and why?
It may be the design, the tone, their style? Is there a weekly feature that you hang out for?
There is a reason why you read the books you like or listen to the music on your playlist. Gather the things you love about those blogs and let that guide you as come up with topics of your own.
What are your short term and long term goals with blogging?
What type of readers do you want to capture?
How do you want people to feel when they read your article?
What type of “voice” or “tone”do you want to use?
Your answers to these questions will no doubt change as your blog grows and changes form, but knowing why you’re blogging and who you’re blogging for is insanely useful – especially when your blog grows and the time comes that you need to deal with brands down the track and evaluating whether a product is the correct fit for your audience.
The final step in the pre-planning process is deciding how to hone and own YOUR unique perspective. Giving things a fresh perspective will greatly help you and your blog.
What can you add to topics that you think other blogs might have missed?
What are the things you think only you have thought about and would want to share with others?
Infusing topics or trends ever-so-slightly and infuse your blog with your personality, your experiences, opinions, tastes and skills can shed new light to common things.
Find one trend, like blog link ups for example, and incorporate something new in them. It would benefit not only you but your blogs readers and other bloggers as well.
This is all for now and I hope this helps! XOXO
